Radio Essay on Hope

Nieman Audio Class

November 14, 2010

This fall I’m taking a radio class at the Nieman Foundation with Jeb Sharp of Public Radio International. We’re learning how to create short audio essays, integrating interviews and sounds that we edit in Audacity. I’m working on a 5-minute piece on my grandmother, using the interviews I recorded in January. Keep checking for updates! Should be posted soon.

More writing

May 27, 2010

I’ve lost a little momentum for the “Hope” project, but will pick it up again later…

In the meantime, I should keep writing anyway! The end of the Nieman year has come…and with it, goodbye toasts, hugging, BBQs, and tears. It’s been an amazing year for me– and I’ll be sad to see these Niemans go.

I’ve also written some pieces for my magazine class this fall, which I’ll post here, too. Feedback welcome! My summer class on feature writing starts at the end of June, so I’ll be sure to put that stuff on the blog, too.

Winter in Cambridge

February 17, 2010

As I work on editing the Bill O’Donovan video, I thought I’d break up the blog a bit and insert some photos from the beautiful, snowy streets of Cambridge:

Here’s the person I went to Virginia to meet – one of my grandmother’s oldest and dearest friends, who I was lucky enough to find, still at the paper. Bill and I talked for a bit, then had a really nice lunch (and yes, we discussed the future of journalism!) and then he let me interview him (keep your eyes peeled for the video to come!). Enjoy.

A few interviews…

February 11, 2010

A new MacBook Pro calls for some updates to the blog! Linked above is one of my first interviews in Williamsburg with Rusty Carter, the Editor of the Gazette. He told me this story about three times before I’d gotten it right on tape. So thank you, Rusty, for your patience! Here it is: Interview with Rusty

And my second interview, with Ann Efimetz, a reporter at the Gazette who was hired by Hope (see: Red Sox Nation): Ann Efimetz

And one last short interview, with a woman who showed me a picture of herĀ father, who used to work at the Gazette: Gazette

Final Cut Pro

January 25, 2010

After taking a short-term (i.e. 6-9pm weeknights, 3 weeks straight) Multimedia Communications Class this January, plus a 2-day Final Cut Pro training, I’m inspired to finally edit my video of Bill O’Donovan and put together my interviews from the Gazette…Keep checking for updates!

PS – and, I’m also in the market for a new laptop…thinking MacBook Pro!
